Thrombosis Prevention: 5 Everyday Actions for Healthy Veins

Why Thrombosis Prevention Matters

A thrombosis develops when a blood clot forms in a vein – usually in the deep leg veins. It becomes dangerous when the clot breaks loose and travels to the lungs: a pulmonary embolism can be life-threatening. People who lie or sit a lot are particularly at risk, for example after operations or with limited mobility. Targeted thrombosis prevention can significantly reduce the risk.

5 Everyday Actions for Thrombosis Prevention

  • Walk and move regularly: Even short walks or frequently standing up during sedentary activity activate the vein pump in the legs.
  • Drink enough: About 1.5 to 2 liters daily keep the blood fluid (unless there are medical reasons against it). A drinking log helps keep track.
  • Do foot and leg exercises: Rotate the feet or alternately pull the toes toward you and stretch them – this activates the calf muscles.
  • Avoid prolonged sitting or lying: Change position regularly and deliberately take movement breaks.
  • Elevate the legs: This promotes venous return and relieves the leg veins.

Using Compression Stockings Correctly

For elevated risk, doctors often prescribe medical compression stockings. They apply targeted pressure to the legs and support blood flow. Important: put the stockings on in the morning before getting up, while the legs are not yet swollen, and ensure a wrinkle-free fit.

Take Warning Signs Seriously

Swelling, a feeling of tightness, pain, or warmth in one leg can indicate a thrombosis. If you notice such signs, seek medical advice immediately. With mendracare, you can record observations such as swelling or the movement exercises performed in the daily log, documenting them clearly within the care team.
